A GUIDE TO PLANNING A WEDDING IN SAN ANGELO AND THE SURROUNDING AREA

This San Angelo wedding planning guide is to be a precursor to my more in depth and offical wedding planning guide. You can find a link to that guide down below.

After photographing and "working" with many brides in not only the San Angelo area but also the West Texas area and out of state, I’ve created this guide to help plan a wedding in San Angelo, West Texas and beyond. I am not a wedding planner I just strive to help my couples plan and enjoy a stress free wedding day (as less stressful as it can be!).

So, please share this with anyone you know that’s soon to be or recently engaged!

WHO AM I?
I am Anthony Godines — I started out like many photographers shooting anything and everything and this has really helped me figure out what I like shooting and what I don't. After doing this for a little over a year, I found that I truly loved photographing people. This ultimately led me to photographing couples and then weddings. Weddings have been my main pursuit and passion. I am always striving to be better in every way than the last time I held my camera, so, every shoot is new and challenging and I hope you want to be a part of that.

WEDDING PLANNING:

First — pick a season. As soon as you set the date for the wedding, everything else will fall into place nicely. The best venues (as well as photographers) are booked for prime dates about 1 year to 6 months in advance, sometimes even 2 years in advance. Believe it or not, you are not the only person getting married on your set date so be sure to book your chosen San Angelo or Abilene wedding photographer and your dream venue early.

DETAILS MATTER

Planning and picking your card stock can be time consuming and frustrating.

I have Partnered with Basic invite in hopes that this partnership will help my couples tackle an item on their wedding planning list.

The Best Wedding Venues in San Angelo and surrounding area

Here are my favorite 5 wedding venues in and around the San Angelo area — they are in no particular order.

If I had a favorite venue it would be Christoval Vineyards and Winery. They are located about 15 miles or so outside of San Angelo, Texas. This makes it one of the most beautiful and easily accessible wedding venues to San Angelo brides. The Vineyard sits on 25 acres on the bank of the spring-fed Concho River in Christoval, Texas. They allow for different variations of set ups depending on guest size which can be up to 200 people in some cases. You can have the ceremony inside the chapel or outside on the patio with great views of the vineyard. This venue is perfect for keeping you and your guest on site and in one location for both the ceremony and reception.

Cain's Cove is located on Lake Nasworthy in San Angelo, Texas. It's about a 20 minute drive from the center of town. There is a great looking gazebo right on the lakes edge and makes for a great scene for that first kiss. This venue is also great for keeping you and your guests on site and in one location for both the ceremony and reception if you wish.

Concho Christoval River Retreat and B&B is one of the best hidden venues in our area. It is located right next to Christoval Vineyards and also sits on the bank of the spring-fed Concho River in Christoval, Texas. They offer amazing and well kept grounds to have your ceremony and reception. They do offer several cottages on the property to be used as getting ready rooms or if you simply want to stay a night or two and enjoy the outdoors.

SAN ANGELO ART MUSEUM

The San Angelo Art Museum is located right on the Concho River around the San Angelo downtown area and offers a four thousand square foot, open air rooftop deck. From that deck guest are treated to a dramatic and beautiful view of the nearby Concho River as well as the Downtown San Angelo skyline. The San Angelo Art Museum is a great venue as it offers both on-site ceremony and reception areas as well as the beautiful surrounding area which is ideal for wedding day portraits.

If you love history and beautiful architecture Fort Concho, National Landmark in San Angelo, Texas might be the right venue for you. Fort Concho was established in 1867, along the banks of the Concho River and covered more than 1600 acres. Today, the old frontier army post is now a historic preservation project and museum. Several of the buildings out at Fort Concho are available to rent for special events such as weddings and receptions. Fort Concho is a great place if you're looking for that West Texas vibe for your wedding day.

OTHER VENUES WORTH CHECKING OUT:

The Cactus Hotel – Depending on the time of day they have amazing light inside the venue. This venue wasn't in my top 5 as I haven't photographed a full wedding here yet although I have photographed bridals and a reception back in 2015 when I began my wedding photography journey. They do offer plenty of space an options for both your ceremony and reception not to mention the beautiful architecture inside the hotel is fantastic for wedding day portraits.

 VISTA CIELO ROSA

Vista Cielo Rosa is a new wedding venue that is opening towards the end of 2017 located in Christoval, Texas. This "Christoval Hill Country property features 21 acres of outdoor space with multiple ceremony location options both indoors and out." I have yet to photograph in this venue as it is brand new to our area but from the looks and vibe of it I am eagerly waiting to book a wedding out there. I attended the open house back in November 2017 and got to take in the venue first hand as I toured the grounds and wow, this venue will definitely be on the top of my list once I have the opportunity to shoot here.

Visit there website below for more information.

CEREMONY

The 5 venues I mentioned above have space for an on site ceremony.

Christoval Vineyard and Winery | Chapel in the vineyard

Not sure if you want your ceremony inside or outside? Well, Chapel in the vineyard out at Christoval Vineyard and Winery has you covered on both. You can't go wrong out here having your ceremony inside or outside.

CAINS COVE

Cains cove offers both indoor and outdoor areas for your ceremony or reception. Most couples choose the gazebo outdoors for their ceremony and either inside or the spacious patio for the reception. The gazebo sits right at the bank of lake nasworthy.

CONCHO CHRISTOVAL RIVER RETREAT AND B&B

As I mentioned before, Concho Christoval River Retreat B&B has plenty of outdoor space for your ceremony and reception. Unfortunately, they do not offer anything for an indoor ceremony or reception. However, open air tents are a good option for those that want some type of shade or shelter on their wedding day.

SAN ANGELO ART MUSEUM

The art museum offers both indoor and outdoor locations for your ceremony and reception. There is a patio available and offers a fantastic view of downtown San Angelo. There is also space indoors for your reception as well as great locations around the property for your wedding day photos.

FORT CONCHO

Fort Concho offers a variety of on-site locations, 7 to be exact with the commissary being one of the most popular picks along with the stables which happens to be the largest and most popular for receptions. There are plenty of great areas around Fort Concho both indoor and outdoor for wedding day photos.

WHERE TO TAKE PICTURES IN SAN ANGELO

One of the good things with all the venues mentioned above is that you generally do not need to leave the property for photos. There are plenty of photo opportunities on site for photos of the family, wedding party, and you two.

If you're looking for a few more ideas, perhaps for engagement photos or wedding day photos, some of my favorite spots are right downtown San Angelo. If you're looking for something a little more out in nature then there are plenty of spots in and around town for that, we'll just have to make sure there is time allotted for this if we're doing this on the wedding day.

INDOOR PHOTO LOCATIONS IN SAN ANGELO

You might be wondering where do you go for photos if it rains or let's face it, if it's too damn hot outside.

Here's a short list for those weddings that might be downtown or even those downtown engagement shoots: – Any restaurant or coffee shop with good natural window light. I'm sure most places wont mind if you happen to spend a little cash and ask nicely. Who's going to say no to a bride in her wedding dress!?

We shot half of this engagement shoot in Stangos coffee shop in downtown San Angelo:

WEDDING DAY TIMELINE

My requirements as a photographer are 15 minutes with family, 20-30 minutes with the wedding party and 30-45 minutes with just you two. Couples photos on the wedding day is my favorite time of the day! I tell all my couples, if I can only photograph you guys one time the entire day, let it be at sunset. The lighting is perfect at this time!

Have you considered a first look? This is something we can talk about in more depth in person but generally the first look will offer more wedding day couples photos as well as a more streamlined and less stressful wedding day.

HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU SUGGEST WE SET ASIDE FOR WEDDING DAY COVERAGE?

Generally if you are looking to capture the whole day from getting ready to recpetion, we recommend 8 - 10 hours of wedding day coverage.

Otherwise, most weddings can be captured with 6 - 8 hours of coverage.
